Day 164 - The Canadian Shield

Few landscapes have shaped Canada as profoundly as the Canadian Shield. Stretching across nearly half the country, this ancient expanse of exposed granite, boreal forest, rivers, and millions of lakes has influenced how people travelled, worked, created, and imagined the country for thousands of years. Long before Canada existed, First Nations including the Anishinaabe, Cree, Innu, Dene, and many others travelled these waterways. Canoes, portage routes, and seasonal camps formed networks of trade, communication, and cultural exchange. European fur traders later adopted many of these same routes, making the Shield the backbone of an economy that helped shape the country. Its geology also determined where people settled and what they built. Rich mineral deposits gave rise to mining communities, while countless lakes fostered a culture of paddling, fishing, and summer cottages. Artists and writers found meaning here as well. Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven turned away from European scenery in favour of rocky shorelines, windswept pines, and northern light. Canadian writers, including Margaret Atwood, Robertson Davies, Farley Mowat, and Pierre Berton, returned to Shield landscapes as places of endurance, isolation, survival, reflection, and distance. Many of Canada's best-known symbols trace back to this landscape: the canoe, the loon, the beaver, the cottage, the canoe, even the idea of Canada itself as a vast northern wilderness all emerged from the geography of the Shield.
